Day 8: Men’s & Women’s Double Eliminations begin, while Alexia Kiefer Quintana, Sol Degrieck, Javi Escribano, Vasily Zakharko win opening round of Youth’s
Day eight of the 2025 Playa Surf CBbC Hotel Tenerife El Médano Windsurf Grand Slam proved to be the most intense day of the competition thus far as a variety of Youth’s, Pro Women’s and Men’s heats hit the water between 10:00 to 19:30 local time. El Cabezo turned on at various points throughout the day with sets up to logo high rolling through intermittently, which provided a great canvas for for the world’s best sailors to show exactly what they are capable of.
Youth’s
U21 Girl’s
Having pushed Sarah-Quita Offringa (Starboard / NeilPryde / Maui Ultra Fins) all the way in yesterday’s Pro Women’s final it was perhaps hardly surprising to see Alexia Kiefer Quintana (Duotone Windsurfing) win the opening U21 Girl’s final – as she did in Gran Canaria. Maria Morales (Goya Windsurfing) claimed a solid second place ahead of Lisa Wermeister (Duotone / Maui Ultra Fins) and Helena Lale (Severne / Severne Sails).
U18 Girl’s
It was a similar case in the opening final of the U18 Girl’s where Sol Degrieck (Severne / Severne Sails), who finished third in yesterday’s Single Elimination, dominated proceedings with a superb display as she racked up two waves in the excellent range and landed a forward loop to claim a clearcut victory ahead of Trine Gobisch (Duotone Windsurfing), Lizzlotte Schilling Andrew (F2 / F2 Sails) and Natsuki Wakasa (Goya Windsurfing).
U18 Boy’s
Javier Escribano (Goya Windsurfing) won last time out in Gran Canaria last month, but had to do things the hard way there by coming back through the Double Elimination. The 16-year-old made no mistake at the beginning day of today though as he claimed a confident victory in the final. The young Spaniard made a strong start by quickly landing an excellent pushloop, which then gave him the rest of the heat to concentrate on waves. Peter Gobisch (Duotone Windsurfing) was Escribano’s closest challenger followed by Ryoma Sugi (Starboard / North Sails) and Bjørn Olesen (Severne / Severne Sails), who finished third in Gran Canaria.
U15 Boy’s
Vasily Zakharko (Goya Windsurfing) came out on top in the U15 Boy’s with his wave riding setting him apart from the rest of the competition. Ramon Barutell (Goya Windsurfing) won the battle in the air, but couldn’t quite find the second wave score he needed to challenge for top honours, but still takes home second place ahead of Anton Gobisch (Duotone Windsurfing) and Daniel Dunkerbeck (Starboard / Severne Sails), who is the latest Dunkerbeck to start coming through the ranks.
Women’s
Having been knocked out in the quarterfinals yesterday, defending event champion Lina Erpenstein (Severne / Severne Sails) made a successful start to her come back bid as she won both of her heats today. Erpenstein has only just started sailing again after suffering a serious foot injury earlier this year in Chile, so will be happy to have a couple of heats under her belt. Meanwhile, Maria Behrens (Duotone Windsurfing / Maui Ultra Fins) also advanced through the opening two rounds, claiming second place in Heat 40 after landing a decent forward loop and linking together two solid waves.
In the bottom half of the draw, Cori McFarlane (Simmer / Simmer Sails) won her second round heat after linking a couple of powerful waves together – including one turn where she fully blew out the fins and did well to hold on to it to earn 5.75 points for one turn. Meanwhile, Milanka Linde (Severne / Severne Sails) secured the second qualifying position from Heat 41 and will lineup against McFarlane, Behrens and Pauline Katz (Severne / Severne Sails) in the third round.
Men’s
Wave of the Day
Dieter van der Eyken (Severne / Severne Sails) produced the wave of the day as the Belgian earned the first excellent wave score of the competition in Heat 40 as he combined a sick opening turn with a proper frontside 360 – which got the Belgian pretty pumped as he claimed it afterwards. The Belgian looked dynamic in the Single Elimination and continued to look just as effective today as he successfully advances from Heat 40 into the fifth round of the Double.
Moritz Mauch (Simmer / Simmer Sails) also advanced from Heat 40 despite admitting to not feeling quite so dynamic on the bigger gear, but still delivered an excellent variety of turns. Mauch and van der Eyken brought the comebacks of Arthur Arutkin (Flikka / GUNSAILS / Black Project Fins) and Jules Denel (Tabou / GA Sails) to an end after both of the Frenchman mounted solid come backs as they started from the opening round and advanced through the opening four.
Late in the evening, Heat 41, was eventually completed after being cancelled earlier due to the wind dropping, but it was a tricky heat with the tide being extremely low, so certainly knowledge of where the rocks were was advantageous as losing your fins was a very real risk. In the end, Julian Salmonn (Naish / Naish Sails) claimed a narrow win ahead of Alessio Stillrich (Bruch Boards / Bruch Sails) as Baptiste Cloarec’s (RRD / RRD Sails) and Hayata Ishii’s (Quatro / Goya Windsurfing / MFC) Tenerife campaigns were brought to an end.
The other standout was Hayata Ishii, who earned the second highest wave score of the day in Heat 38 after landing one of the best frontside 360s of the day, while his compatriot Takuma Sugi (Tabou / GA Sails / Black Project Fins) was unlucky not to advance from Heat 37 after finishing tied on points with Cloarec, but lost out with the Frenchman having the higher single wave score – 5.12 points.
The forecast for Saturday has improved as it looks as though the northeasterly trades could continue – whereas as earlier in the day WindGuru was showing south winds, so hopefully with a bit of luck we will see either more wave action or racing – as tomorrow is the last day of the Slalom X holding period. Skippers’ meeting for all fleets will be held at 10:00am (GMT+1) tomorrow morning with a first possible start at 10:30am for Waves and 11:00am for Slalom X.
