After a couple of lighter wind days, by Pozo standards, the wind machine fully cranked back into gear on Day 7 of the 2025 Gran Canaria Gloria Windsurf World Cup to provide a scintillating day action with there being some great waves on offer too – both for riding and for jumping.
Youth’s
Girl’s U21
Alexia Kiefer Quintana (Duotone Windsurfing) claimed a clean sweep of victories in the U18 Girl’s fleet as the 20-year-old secured a dominant victory by landing a collection of big, clean backloops and displaying some dynamic wave riding.
The three finals produced the exact same results each time round meaning Maria Morales (Goya Windsurfing) takes home second place followed by Lisa Wermeister (Duotone Windsurfing / Maui Ultra Fins) and Helena Lale (Severne / Severne Sails).
Boy’s U21
Gregory Stathopoulous (Goya Windsurfing) produced a superb display of sailing in the Boy’s U21 Final to earn a hugely deserved victory ahead of local boy Carlos Kiefer Quintana (Duotone Windsurfing). The latter led for much of the opening half of the heat, but then Stathopoulos took things up a notch or two as he rotated through a perfect double forward to earn 8.12 points and then quickly landed a clean backloop to move into the lead. The 19-year-old Greek didn’t rest on his laurels as he then linked together the best wave of the heat as he combined a frontside 360 and backside 360 to secure the top spot on the podium.
Kiefer Quintana sailed well landing a forward off the lip, but couldn’t quite deny Stathopoulos on this occasion and the 18-year-old will now have to wait for the Double Elimination.
The podium is currently completed by Anton Richter (JP / NeilPryde / Maui Ultra Fins) with Samuele Ferraro (PATRIK / PATRIK Sails) in fourth – for the time being at least.
During the early evening Samuele Ferraro (PATRIK / PATRIK Sails) successfully defended his fourth place from the Single Elimination as the young Italian ended Takumi Moriya’s (Severne / Severne Sails) comeback through the Double Elimination after the Japanese freestyler had won his first couple of heats. Ferraro will face next Anton Richter (JP / NeilPryde / Maui Ultra Fins) in the battle for the podium with the winner going on to face Kiefer Quintana.
Boy’s U18
The Boy’s U18 Double Elimination also began in the late afternoon and it is Fernando Sottile (WeOne) who has mounted the best comeback after successfully defeating fellow compatriot Antonio Silvestri in the battle for fourth and fifth and he will now face Javi Escribano (Goya Windsurfing / MFC) next in the fight for third and fourth respectively.
Master’s
The Master’s fleet were first out of the blocks this morning and they produced an entertaining display as the revelled in today’s better conditions. In the end, Lars Gobisch (Duotone Windsurfing) managed to come from behind to claim the top spot in the Single Elimination as the German managed to cause an upset by edging out reigning world champion – Mike Friedl (Quatro / Goya Windsurfing) – who had to settle for second. Meanwhile, Michael Viscovich (JP / NeilPryde) currently completes the podium with Valter Scotti (WeOne / Severne Sails) in fourth place, but there’s still potentially the Double Elimination to come.
The forecast for Saturday looks very promising again with the strong winds expected to continue, while the waves are predicted to pick up to 1.5 metres, which should hopefully provide a pulsating finale to the Women’s and Youth’s Double Eliminations. The sailors will meet at 09:30am (GMT+1) on Saturday morning for the skippers’ meeting with the action commencing from 10am onwards.
